Al application has been made by Eatonways Luxury Travel Ltd. to the West Midland Traffic Commissioners to provide some revolutionary services which, if approved, could have a far-reaching effect on public transport operations within the city of Birmingham and the Midlands.
Already operating the Birmingham city to Birmingham airport services, Eatonways now seek to operate a city centre service at 15-minute intervals on weekdays, with a 30-minute service on Sundays from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. to link the city centre car parks, railway stations, hotels, °Mee developments, theatres, shopping, bus termini and other public thoroughfares.
This service would operate within the city continuously with a special one-man bus at a fiat fare of 6d., which would enable car owners to leave their cars at city car parks and use this service together with shoppers, office workers, and so on. The vehicles used would be clearly marked "City Centre Service".
The second part of the application would be to link this with non-stop express services to cities and towns at Wolverhampton, Tamworth, Redditch and Coventry, picking up and setting down only within the city and town boundaries.
The third part of the application—and probably the part which will attract the most fierce opposition—is to operate direct express coach services to London and Manchester, again linking with the local express services into the city. Vehicles to be used on this express service would be of the luxury type providing suitable seating and toilet facilities. Eatonways are shortly to open a booking office for the hub of these operations at the side of Baskerville House, where eventually they will provide travel agency facilities.
