AFTER an extensive analysis programme Downsway Supermarkets Ltd, the St Albans based chain with 80 stores, has completely re-equipped its transport fleet. The company last week took delivery of three Volvo F86 tractor units, two 40ft and two 28ft York trailers and three Leyland Clydesdale rigids.
Transport executive, Bob Milkins, told CM that the analysis had pinpointed The minimum size of fleet necessary to handle the company's business. This meant a reduction of almost half in the number of vehicles operated.
The company has introduced roll-on, roll-off pallets at the same time and the trailers have been custom-built to carry these. Ratcliff 1-ton tat!'lifts are fitted. The vehicles operate as far afield as Birmingham, East Anglia and Guildford, providing a weekly or twice-weekly service to all stores.
