II Police are treating an attack on a truck driver as attempted murder after he was stripped, beaten and abandoned in a field in sub-zero temperatures.
Ken Norgrove suffered two broken ankles in the night-time attack in Barking, Essex, before he was dumped in Detling, Kent, wearing nothing but his boxer shorts. It took him 45 minutes to crawl to a nearby road to raise the alarm.
Norgrove, an employee of AE Hawkins (Haulage Contractors) of Kingswinforcl, West Midlands, was asleep when a gang broke into the cab of his Volvo FM12 before beating his legs with an iron bar.
The vehicle contained 250,000 worth of beer and spirits which he was due to deliver to a cash-and-carry in Birmingham the following morning.
Hawkins' operations manager Peter Hancox says: It is absolutely scandalous— they never gave him a chance to hand the vehicle over."
The attack took place on 9 February: anyone with information should contact DC Tom Richards of Kent Police on 01303 289410.
