A RTICULATED units operated by
British Road Services will soon be carrying heavier payloads; taking advantage of the new higher weight regulations. A total of 250 tractive units and 165 complete engine/gearbox units for use in vehicles of gross weights of 28 and 22 tons has been ordered from A.E.C. Ltd. B.R.S. has also ordered 20 Mercury 16-ton-gross two-axle rigids which will carry two tons more than previously permitted.
The new orders show a marked move towards the greater use of articulated vehicles in the heavy division, the contracts calling for 200 A.E.C. Mandator and 50 Mercury tractive units, whilst 165 diesel engines and six-speed gearboxes will be fitted in 100 28-ton tractive units, 50 22-ton tractive units and 15 fourwheeled 16-ton rigids, all to be built by Seddon Diesel Vehicles Ltd.
