BRITISH ATTEMPTS to deal with illegal immigrants smuggled in the back of trucks are a "shambles", according to the Irish Road Haulage Association (IRHA).
Spokesman Jimmy Quinn says the 1RHA has been talking to the Irish government about ways to avoid repeating British mistakes: "We were especially keen that the judge, jury and executioner' role adopted by the British authorities would not be replicated here.
"The whole British approach to this area has been a shambles, with the House of Lards throwing out the legislation yet the Home Office refusing to refund the fmes that hauliers paid out because they had not the wherewithal to appeal."
The IRHA has also set out new guidelines to help Irish hauliers stay within the law and help protect them if they unknowingly bring in illegal immigrants. These include trailer checks, padlock and seal ownership and driver demands for heartbeat and carbon dioxide checks when boarding ferries.
