THE FOUR-WHEELER rigid sector, predominantly an 18-tonne GVW market, has been fairly static for the past five or six years, consistently accounting for a little over 7,000 units.
The 18-tonner is a fairly versatile machine, but with many urban weight limits set at 7.5 tonnes or below and no economic indicators to suggest any change in demand there is little to suggest this will change in the coming years.
The market is led by Dal where it offers both the LF55 and CF65. Daf s market performance faltered slightly in this sector in 2003,down 3% on 2002. Mercedes lies second, with Volvo continuing to perform adequately despite a relatively unsophisticated product. Iveco has a very good 18-tonner in the new Eurocargo; in 2003 it's already shown signs of market growth in this are. We understand that lveco's management is particularly sweet on the new 18-tonner and has high expectations for market growth this year.
Scania boomed in this area last year on the back of some big fleet deals. Despite the P94 rigid being a hefty beast, it continues to gather a strong following.
