THREE new berths, developed jointly by the
Mersey Docks and Harbour Board and the Blue Funnel Line for the export trade to the Far East, will be opened by the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr. James Callaghan, at Birkenhead on July 29.
In order to regulate the flow of road-borne freight a large, high-security vehicle park is being constructed where drivers will report and await direction to the appropriate offloading point.
The new berths at South Side, Victoria Dock, have been designed in accordance with the latest thinking for the rapid handling of cargo. Extensive use is being made of fork-lift trucks and quayside cranes. Three new transit sheds have been built, each 450 ft. long and 135 ft. wide, with a covered way including railway spurs between each shed: a canopy at the rear of the sheds gives all-weather protection to the unloading bays for road vehicles.
A 35 ft. apron on the dock side of the sheds allows quicker and more efficient loading by six semi-portal cranes, working in conjunction with the ship's own gear.
New Irish Service ex-Fleetwood: A twiceweekly freight service has been instituted between Fleetwood, Castletown (Isle of Man) and Bangor (N. Ireland). General cargo ships are being used and unit loads up to five tons can be handled at present. Consignments will be handled by the agents for the service, Jas. A. Johnstone, Rydal House, Copse Road.
