• International operators will continue to benefit from the discount battle between Stena Sealink and P&O European Ferries following the Government's refusal to allow the two operators to co-operate on crossChannel routes.
Last week's decision by the Department of Trade and Industry forces the two ferry companies to retain different prices on Dover-Calais route.
The DTi agrees with the Office of Fair Trading that the interests of freight operators and passengers are best-served by continuing the continuation existing arrangements.
Although ruling out price agreements and revenue pooling between the two companies, Stella and P&O, DTi minister, Tim Sainsbury, said he would look at any future request to
allow interchangeable tickets, timetabling and capacity reduction.
