AT their first meeting on Tuesday the International Committee of the Traders Road Transport Association studied the implications of the Treaty of Rome as far as own-account (C-licensed) transport is concerned and the progress made towards the formulation of a policy for a harmonized transport regime -within the Common Market.
The • committee concluded that the fundamental:. principle -of trade' and industry's freedom to • choose its own 'means of transPorting .goods, including freedom to Use own-account. transport, was likely to .receive full recognition in the harmonized transport regime, although the possibility of pressure for
fiscal discrimination against this transport should not be ruled out.
It was felt important to establish the maximum effective liaison with the European Economic Community in Brussels. The committee agreed to urge the International Road Transport Union to establish suitable machinery.
The committee felt it was vital that an early decision should be taken regarding the establishment of a Channel link. This was particularly important in view of the need to expand existing sea links if neither tunnel nor bridge were built.
Mr. J. W. Bannard of Unilever was elected chairman of the committee.
