VI weighings vary 'from blitz to zero'

• The Vehicle Inspectorate has been accused of running stop-go enforcement as it emerges that vehicle weighing has varied from zero to blitz levels in the past six months.
Figures from the VI show that weighing activity in October increased five-fold in the Eastern Traffic Area to more than 7,000 vehicles—then followed in January by a twoday national freeze on weighing activity (CM 19-25 January). VI traffic examiners say their management is now telling them to "ease back" on weighings.
The weighing freeze occurred after the VI realised that its management information system had temporarily failed to register 7,000 weighings. Criticism for the regime has come from pressure groups, VI unions and traffic examiners.
But this week VI chief executive Ron Oliver denies the existence of a stop-go policy. There will always be "adjustments" to ensure the VI hits its weighing targets agreed with the Department of Transport, he says.
