FARES charged by Lowestoft corporation since it started operation in 1903 may be increased by id. if a recommendation to that effect is approved by the town council and the Licensing Authority. At present the Id. fare covers a journey of approximately 1,500 yds., although in four cases the Id. fare is valid for a stage length of 2,141 yds.
Until last year, the undertaking has always operated at a profit. Last year a deficit of £72 was incurred, but a loss of £6,370 is expected this year. Some stage modifications have been authorized to reduce the possibility of further losses, and if the addition of Id. to all fares is approved, revenue will be augmented by £5,221 a year.
Lincoln Corporation has now decided to apply for increases outlined in " The Commercial Motor" on January 16. These entail a 24d. minimum charge, the abolition of the 22-journey weekly ticket and new weekly and children's fares.
Additions of id. to 6d. are proposed by United Automobile Services, Ltd., on 68 services in the Yorkshire Traffic Area. It is proposed that ordinary single fares of 6id. and over should go up by 1d. where the present fare includes an odd 1d. Thereafter, it is suggested that ld.-6d. be added to ordinary returns from 6d. upwards, and increases of id.-2d. are proposed for the workmen's return fares from 2d. upwards. Revised contract and multiple ticket rates are also suggested.
East Midland Motor Services, Ltd„ has also proposed revisions on 61 services or parts of services operated in the same area. It is suggested that Id. be added to all ordinary and workmen's return fares, and that new season-ticket rates be instituted. Fares co-ordinated with those of other undertakings are not affected.
Ribble Motor Services, Ltd., has also applied for revisions affecting its services in the Yorkshire Traffic Area.
A deficit of £32,248 is expected by Chesterfield Corporation at the end of the current financial year. To meet this, application is likely to be made for permission to add id. to the present lid. minimum adult single fare, and to revise charges for children.
