The standard engine is, of course, a two-stroke design and as such uses a gear-driven Roots supercharger for scavenging.
The by-pass system is claimed to allow the engine to take maximum advantage from the addi tion of a high-efficiency turbocharger.
At low boost, the Roots blower supplies the air whereas, at high boost, the by-pass valve opens and unloads the supercharger.
According to Detroit Diesel, the use of the by-pass blower reduces the parasitic power loss associated with the positively driven supercharger and can also be used with air-to-air charge cooling.
