THE Mercedes-Benz service department is recommending the addition of 15 per cent petrol to the diesel fuel to prevent the waxing which is currently causing extensive trouble to operators.
Although this practice is frowned upon by some organisations, Mercedes-Benz says that 15 per cent petrol can be added safely while up to 20 per cent (ABSOLUTE MAXIMUM) is common in severe Scandinavian conditions.
Kerosene should definitely not be used, according to Mercedes.
If the system is already clogged with wax, the Mercedes recommendation is to apply gentle heat to the fuel lines.
Heating the fuel tank is not much help as most of the problems occur in the lines and in the fuel filters.
Almost unbelievably, Mercedes-Benz is finding that several operators are running into trouble because their vehicles have no anti-freeze at all in the cooling system.
For the conditions prevailing in the UK at the moment, the recommended concentration of anti-freeze is a 50 per cent solution.
