THE CAVALIER attitude of most drivers towards advisory speed limits on motorways is emphasised by Transport and Road Research Laboratory observations over 22 months in 1978-79 at10 signals on a 12mile stretch of M1 between junctions 10 and 13.
The signals were set 1,576 times, with 50mph as the most common advisory limit. This was ignored by 85 per cent of drivers of vehicles less than 5 metres long (substantially cars). Even a 60mph warning was disregarded by more than half of them.
The best that can be said is that drivers were more willing to slow down when they couldn't see where they were going.
