"FIT-and-forget" flasher units produced by Thomas Electronics for commercial vehicles and designed to last the working life of the vehicle are now also available for buses and coaches.
The solid-state flashers are protected against short circuits and can withstand sudden and extreme changes in temperature, says TEL.
The units have been fitted to ERF, Foden, Seddon Atkinson, DAF and Ford trucks. London Transport, West Midlands Transport Executive and Eastern Coaches are now evaluating them.
TEL says that the "unreliability" of relay-system flasher units currently installed in buses and coaches led them to develop an "idiot-proof" 530 flasher unit equivalent to the CAV 489 unit to tackle the problem faced by psv operators still using flashers based on the relay system.
