• Despite last year's 15% drop in Europe's car market, the Economist Intelligence Unit reports that the top 25 component manufacturers made a profit of £9.7bn with an average margin of 4.1%. In contrast, vehicle manufacturers suffered a combined loss of £2.7bn.
Only two of the largest 25 component suppliers Du Pont and ZF) made a less. Two others, PPG and BIR, returned margins above 10%.
The EIU report looks at the key issues facing the c6mponent supply industry, which it identifies as product technology, system sup ply, innovation, financial strength, globalisation of suppliers and strategic alliances.
