• Customs and Excise officers seized a record 130 vehicles in a five-day campaign against diesel fraudsters in South and West Yorkshire .
A team of 30 officers accompanied the Customs road fuel testing units visiting commercial and domestic premises and challenging drivers at diesel retail outlets throughout the region.
Bradford was found to have wide-scale abus with 80 vehicles seized in the city, while 13 vehicle using illegal fuel were found visiting the John Menzie depot at Stirton.
The majority of vehicles detained have now bee restored on the payment of penalty, with Customs co lecting nearly £50,000 in fines.
"We have carried out similar operations in othe areas of the country but the results in Yorkshire hay exceeded all others," says a Customs spokesman. "W. have made seizures at three-quarters of the premise visited and nearly one in two drivers challenged at thi gas oil retail outlets were found to be using red diesel ii their fuel tanks.'
He adds: "Seven of the vehicles seized in thi Leeds/Bradford area were found to be using laun dered fuel from which the red market dye had beer removed, while another three were found to haw false tanks fitted."
