THE long-established terminus used by Southdown Motor Services Ltd. at Pool Valley, in the centre of Brighton. is threatened with closure. Brighton Town Council has instructed its planning committee to draw up a final three-year lease for the company's offices in Royal York Buildings. The committee had recommended that a new five-year lease, backdated to December, 1961, should be granted at a new rent of £3,500, but this was rejected by the council.
Councillor Dudley Baker, who moved the rejection, said that Pool Valley could be. used for a much-needed car park and that Southdown could find an alternative site. Councillor I. Dudeney, the chairman of the planning committee, pointed out that the onus would be on the council to find Southdown an alternative site if it wanted the company to go elsewhere.
It is understood that the actual bus stands at Pool Valley form part of the public highway.
