Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

INTER CITY TRUCKS has shut up shop after 35 years of international haulage to concentrate on its freight forwarding business.

The Hythe-based firm was established in 1968 by directors John and June Faulkner; it was one of the first British firms to offer international services.

However, like many other transport companies its profits have been hit by the high price of diesel, high taxes, increasing foreign competition and cuts in UK exports and manufacturing.

The pair now plan to concentrate on their freight forwarding firms. ICT Logistics and Genesis Distribution Services.

"All the fun has gone out of the transport business," says managing director June Faulkner. -It's become harder and harder for hauliers to make a living. It's a bitter pill to swallow but we have decided to do the honourable thing and close now while we are solvent. It's a matter of pride that we will meet our financial obligations to suppliers.

"We will still play a part in transport but the freight will be going on other companies' vehicles rather than our own."

John Faulkner adds: "Regulatory controls are applied with relish despite the fact that the industry continues to diminish in size. I wonder who will be left for the regulators to regulate?"

• Walsall-based haulier S Jones Transport has gone into voluntary administration.A company spokeswoman declined to comment.
