Women and ethnic minorities are underrepresented in road transport, with only 11% of the road freight workforce being female (compared with a 44% average across all sectors) and only 1.6% coming from ethnic minorities (6.4%).
The younger generation is also missing out on career opportunities. Under-25s account for only 7% of the road transport workforce; about half the UK average.
