Quality and layout is up with the best, and it probably has more storage space than anything this side of the Atlantic, at least until the Scania Longline arrives. The extra output squeezed from the engine range gives a useful

boost to performance. while fuel economy. never Mercedes strongest point, is 0.3mpg up on the old model 2546 tested in March.

The only significant negative in our view is the Telligent transmission. With practice and familiarity it would become second nature, but its counter-intuitive operation is initially irritating, and its tendency to protect itself from an imperfect change by dumping you in neutral is disconcerting and of debatable benefit.

That moan aside, the new generation Actros gets our seal of approval. This time at least. we agree with the judges: the Actros is a worthy Truck of the Year.
