A MANCHESTER truck driver has been jailed for three months for a road rage attack in which he threatened to rip a motorist's head off.
William Gardner pleaded guilty to disorderly behaviour and criminal damage to a wing mirror and a mobile phone when he appeared at Manchester crown Court. Prosecuting, William Staunton said motorist Clive Bretherton had to pull in front of Gardner's truck when a three-lane trunk road filtered down into two lanes. Gardner drove very close behind him, flashing his lights and sounding his horn.
At the next junction Gardner got out of his HGV and verbally abused Bretherton, who noticed that Gardner had damaged his wing mirror.
He stopped at another junction and got out of his car intending to phone the police..
Gardner approached and told him to move his car "or I'll rip your head off".
There was a scuffle and the mobile phone was damaged when it hit the ground.
Sentencing Gardner, Judge Anthony Ensor told him: "This must have been a very frightening experience for the motorist.
"I am in no doubt you are a man with a short fuse and the public has to be protected from road rage," he concluded.
