CHESHIRE-BASED James Irlam & Sons and the United Road Transport Union (URTU) appear to have settled their differences by negotiating a pay deal for the firm's 300 drivers.
The union gained recognition at the company in 2001 but last year management effectively sidestepped pay talks by imposing a pay rise on the drivers. This year's deal, which boosts hourly rates by 80p to £7/hr. was accepted by a majority of three to two.
URTU divisional officer Roy Abrahams says: "I am not sure that you would ever describe the relationship as normal but the company has certainly conducted the negotiations in a businesslike way.! am satisfied with the outcome."
lrlam's management, which in the past has made no secret of its dislike of the union, declined to comment as CM went to press. The deal boosts Saturday hourly rates by 50p to £8.50/hr but drivers will no longer be paid during weekday rest breaks.
• Plans for a strike ballot at Scunthorpe-based PD Logistics have been suspended after the union received a revised pay offer last week(CM 16 October). The URTU is recommending the deal.
