CARLISLE and West Cumberland tipper operators are to form themselves into active groups in an endeavour to achieve ,a proper basis of rates and working conditions in the area. This was decided last week at a meeting at Carlisle at which tipper operators from Glasgow, central Scotland, Edinburgh, Ayrshire and Fife discussed general haulage and tipping problems, as well as the need for tipping groups. 1140 RHA area secretaries—Mr. L. J. Stokoe (Scottish) and Mr. D. le Conte (Northern) —attended, as did Mr. Eddie Hemphill. the RI-IA's tipping vehicles group's national chairrrian. Chairman of the Meeting was Mr, Harry Pickthall of Cleator Moor.
Main topic of conversation. I understand, was Contract A licences. and the Scots aperators emphasized the need to approach local Licensing Authorities with requests to examine carefully Contract A licence applications. It was agreed that where the Contract A had been the dominating factor in respect of rate fixing, many established contractors would find it difficult, financially, to replace and recondition vehicles. bearing in mind the standard being demanded by the Ministry.
The Scottish visitors also stressed the necessity of approaching customers with " pencil and paper facts and figures", the Cumberland operators being urged to put their cards on the table when talking rates to customers. If this failed to achieve any results then, in order to avoid debt and fouling the law, the supply of Vehicles at 'unectinomie, rates must be stopped.
