A FTER reviewing traffic returns for the
first 16 months' operation of :he Dartford Tunnel, which has proved popular as a short cut round London for north-south road traffic, the Dartford Tunnel Joint Committee is to ask :he Essex and Kent County Councils to give consideration to the construction of :1 second tunnel.
Traffic through the existing tunnel is growing. At week-ends last summer figures of around 26,000 vehicles a day were achieved. It is expected that by the summer of 1969 the estimated capacity of 39.000 vehicles a day will be exceeded.
Winter, too, shows how popular :he tunnel has become, Traffic in December last was 50 per cent up on . that of December, 1963.
Last year, 4,792,940 vehicles used the tunnel, averaging 13,096 a day..
