• The Minister of Transport has been urged to forbid Britain's bus companies to carry standing passengers.
The ban has been recommended by busmen at Derby and is backed by the town's trades union council.
A spokesman for the council said last week: "If the Ministry considers it dangerous for people to travel in cars without seat belts, it is ludicrous not to stop people standing up in buses travelling at 40 miles an hour,
"This exposes passengers to great risks if the bus driver has to halt suddenly or if he is involved in a crash. It is a dangerous practice because most standing passengers have nothing firm to hang onto and we believe legislation must be passed as a matter of urgency."
