• The Minister of Transport has dismissed the appeal brought by the Borough of Lewes against the decision of the South Eastern Traffic Commissioners granting to Southdown Motor Services Ltd. variations of the conditions of road service licences for stage carriage services so as to authorize an increase in children's fares.
The appellants contended that the increase in children's fares from one-half to threequarters the adult fare placed an excessive burden on one particular section of the travelling public, and that the additional revenue in question would have been more fairly obtained in a manner which spread the increase over a larger section of the fare-paying passengers.
The Minister felt that there were not sufficient grounds for differing from the Commissioners' decision without calling upon the operator to make further investigations of the comparative merits of adopting this or an alternative method of raising the required revenue.
