TWO driverless trucks are being tested by British Railways at Newton Abbott. They are being used to convey goods from wagons to points for loading into lorries for outside deliveries.
The trucks are routed by a single electric wire laid beneath the flooring, and have a safety bumper which switches off the current if an obstruction is met. If necessary, the trucks can be operated in the normal way and driven manually, as they are the standard railway type, manufactured by Scott Electric Vehicles, Ltd., Kidderminster.
For a thorough test, nine tracks have been laid half an inch below the surface at Newton Abbott, and by pressing buttons on a control panel the dispatcher can guide the trticks to any point in the shed.
