• At a national meeting of the Institute of Road Transport Engineers in London last week Colonel T. J. A. Hughesof REME described fully the tasks undertaken by his branch of the Army and the methods used to tackle them.
In speaking of REME's contribution to vehicle' development, Col Hughes gave examples of design changes that had resUlted from' the work of "maintenance advisory groups". In one example, changes to the cab and engine cover of a 1-ton truck were said to have been made which reduced top-overhaul time from 11 man-hours with
the engine removed to four man-hours with it in the vehicle. Examples were given in the paper of requirements quoted by REME when specifying vehicles. These included a maximum allowance of 24 man-hours for two men to remove, replace and test-run an' major assembly and a mean mileage between minor failures of 5,0001cm (3,125 miles) with a! mean engine life before exchange of 100,0001ern (62,500 miles).
