• A county councillor appealed last week for improvements in public transport to and from a fellside town so that sick people can be visited in hospital.
Cllr Raymond Frankland said that it was very difficult for people living in the Westmorland town of Kirkby Stephen to visit sick friends or relatives in hospital at Carlisle nearly 50 miles away.
He told Cumbria County Council, "The bus services have been decimated and we see trains rushing through the town to Carlisle — but none of them stop."
