THE Minister of Transport last week rejected a suggestion that he should introduce legislation to give effect to the recommendations of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research about the need for all engines to be properly maintained in order to prevent unnecessary air pollution by excess fumes.
He told Mr. Ellis Smith (Labour, Stoke South) in the Commons that it was already an offence to use a vehicle emitting smoke or fumes likely to cause damage to property, or injury or danger to anyone. The police could, and did. prosecute offenders.
Noting that well maintained and properly driven diesel-engined vehicles did not make dark smoke, Mr. Marples said officers of his department used their powers to restrict the use of offending goods vehicles and buses until or unless they were repaired and took every opportunity of impressing on operators the necessity for proper maintenance.
