Derbyshire-based heavy haulage firm Hills has ceased trading after more than 30 years in the business. Owner Alan Hill is retiring due to ill health but says he is relieved to be getting out. Three years ago the company was running 36 tractors; Hill cut the fleet to 10 after profits slumped.
He blames the cost of fuel and cutthroat rates: "There is so much competition for jobs these days that you end up working for absolutely zero profit." The company is believed to be retaining its Pye Bridge site for letting. Hill's fleet, which includes eight tractors, seven specialist trailers and two flatbeds. will be auctioned by Malcolm Harrison on 4 March.
