AThe varying categories of drivers' wages
are at present determined by the carrying capacity of the vehicle and not by the gross weight. Assuming the 32-ton-gross vehicle to which you refer has a carrying capacity of over 18 tons, then the current Road Haulage Wages Council rates (RH 84 and RH 86) are 261s 6d in the London area and 256s 3d outside London for a basic week of 40 hours. Any adjustments to these rates are as a result of individual negotiations and this also applies to the scheduled speed and associated rates of pay.
Additionally on April 26 proposals (RH 87) were made to introduce an extra category so that the rates just quoted would still apply to over 18 tons but would be limited to 21 tons, and another category over 21 tons added with new rates of 271s (London) and 266s (outside London). But these proposals still have to be approved.
