• Big differences in the extent to which large and small distribution companies are ready for Europe's single market in 1992 have been revealed in a new survey.
Only 14% of firms with 100 employees or less have taken "positive" action, compared with 42% of medium companies (between 100 and 500 employees) and 62% of big companies (over 500 staff).
In the survey, by TNT Express, which is a member of the Confederation of British Industry's 1992 Initiative, only 29% of small companies say they will change their distribution strategy before 1992.
Half the companies surveyed say they are aware of proposed legislative changes in the European Single Market, such as cabotage, reducing transport quotas and collection of VAT.
Adam Shuter, single market development manager of TNT Express Europe, says the survey reveals the divide in attitudes between small and large companies, with the bigger ones determined to take full advantage of 1992.
"Small firms should not close the door on Europe simply becasue of their size," he says.
