On Wednesday Lord Stokes opened the new Preston bus station, described in CM September 12, and claimed to be Britain's largest road transport building. It was built in 18 months under a contract worth (1.1m. The building brings together the previously dispersed termini of the various routes serving the borough and surrounding region.
There are aftogether 80 departure gates and special attention has been given to the provision of clear directions for the passengers. In the subway approaches alphabetical briefing signs are provided and around the concourse are numerous confirmatory departure gate lists. The terminal is surmounted by a 180ft lighting mast which has been designed with a rotating sign to provide a beacon indicating the location of the bus station.
