THE BALANCE between subsidising current local transport operations and investing in public transport needed to be examined critically, said Dr John Gilbert, the Minister for Transport, during a Commons discussion about the money made available to local authorities. He noted that authorities were being urged to restrict their expenditure during 197576 within the limits set by the rate support grant and the transport supplementary grant. The further restriction on public expenditure announced by the Chancellor in his Budget speech would be taken into account in the allocation of resources for local transport in 1976-77.
Mr Peter Fry (Tory, Wellingborough) said there was a danger that road transport grants tended to be used to subsidise public transport to the detriment of necessary road works and the co-ordination of public transport as a whole.
