On Friday of last week S.T.R., The Commercial Motor costs expert, delivered a special address to the Norwich Traffic Club, He outlined a rational scheme of costing and his address was followed by a prolonged discussion touching, inter alia, upon such matters as the preferable course to adopt of two principal schemes, namely, the purchase of low-priced vehicles and frequent replacement, as against the purchase of first-class machines, carefully maintained and kept in service for reasonably prolonged periods.
S.T.R. pointed out that generalization on such a matter was all that was possible, and in his view the decision turned mainly upon the class of work. Referring to suggested provisional estimates of expenditure, a point was raised as to how to guard against the risk of exceptional cost of operation, various potential causes for this being cited, S.T.R. emphasized that estimated expenditure must in all cases be accompanied by actual records, the latter to
