• The Euro-3 and Euro-4 emissions regulations have finally been ratified by the European Parliament, and Scania has unveiled the bulk of its Euro-3 engine range ahead of next year's deadline.
The Euro-3 emissions knits are all as expected, despite an effort by German MEP Bernd Lange to amend them, while the Euro-4 limits (to be applied in 2005) represent a further 30% cut in carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbon (HC) and NOx emissions, and an 80% reduction in particulates (PM).
Scania has filled in the gaps in its Euro-3 engine range from 230hp to 420hp with new variants of its nine, 11 and 12-litre engines. The latest Euro-3 engines include a 380hp version of the unit-injection 11-litre unit; like the other new engines, this produces slightly more torque than its predecessor, the Euro-2 380.
Scania is also offering a factory-fitted particulate trap For its nine-litre engines, and a range or "environmentally optimised" trucks suited to various applications. The firm has also widened its range of Opticruise automated transmissions, including an eight-speed unit suitable for 18-tonne operation.
