Malcolm Bingham, manager of highways, traffic and urban
access from the Freight Transport Association, says that one of the biggest problems faced by truck drivers is the lack of patience shown by other road users on major trunk roads. He points to the notorious A66 that traverses the Pennines between Scotch Corner and the M6 at Penrith. Bingham explains: "We've been campaigning fora long time to have that completely dualled — it's not the number of accidents that concerns us so much as the severity. There is a high proportion of HGVs and agricultural traffic on the road. Other vehicles get stuck behind and try to overtake in inappropriate places such as hills and blind bends."
