PROPOSED MOVES to stop fans carrying alcohol when they travel by bus to certain Scottish sporting events would have to be strengthened in the interests of the driver, declared Frank McElhone (Labour, Queen's Park) last week.
Speaking during a Commons debate on the Criminal Justice (Scotland) Bill which introduces the ban, he pondered what would happen if, for example, a coach left a local pub for a football match, drink was onboard, but the driver spotted it only when he was half way down a motorway.
It was a difficult situation for the driver, said Mr McElhone, particularly if some fans had already drunk a fair amount. The future of those drivers had to be guaranteed.
Football fans could be prevented from boarding a coach, yet they were still entitled to carry six pints of alcohol with them in a container, under the Licensing (Scotland) Act of 1976.
