A MAJOR HEADACHE for transport operators sending replacement lorries to the Continent has been removed by EEC Transport Ministers.

At their meeting in Brussels last week they agreed that in future these lorries will not require a Community licence or special authorisation. There was some opposition to the move to simplify the procedure. The West Germans, for example, said that replacement lorries should be dispatched by rail.

British Transport Secretary David Howell was pleased with the results.

A British spokesman said: "This means that in future firms will face less paperwork and red tape and won't find themselves knocking on embassy doors in foreign countries at weekends."
