for Lancashire firm
THE FIRST Mercedes-Benz 16215 tractive units powered by the more powerful and slower revving 10.96-litre 0M421 V6 diesel are now going into service with Bristow's Transport of Padiharn, Lancashire.
Managing director Frank Bristow says the 34-tonne design weight Mercedes was chosen after two-and-a-half years' trouble free running with three older 1619S chassis, each of which covered around .320,000km (200,000 miles).
The fleet operates in the livery of Hepworth Industrial Plastics, which manufactures pipes and Astaseal replacement windows. Pipes are normally carried on flat platform semi-trailers, while heavier UPVC window extrusions are hauled in curtainsiders.
Greater • performance flexibility is apparent in the 1621S — the V6 diesel produces 10 per cent more torque than its predecessor, gearchanging is less, and fuel economy benefits. On one of the first long haul runs with a 19-ton payload, but returning empty, Bristow recorded: a consumption of better than 28.2 litres /100km(10mpg).
