A COMPETITION to find the most unusual application for vinyl packaging tape, which held a car boot lid firmly shut for more than 3,000 miles of winter motoring, has been sponsored by Carton Industries. I was going to suggest its use to seal Arthur Scargill's mouth but the miners beat me to it. In doing so they probably saved lorry drivers from ugly incidents engineered to gratify the frustrated gauleiter of Barnsley.
Meanwhile I have been celebrating the centenary of the death of his preceptor, Karl Marx. That was a great day for humanity. The tragedy is that he was born at all.
