M&R GRANITE & Marble and one of its directors have been ined after a man was trapped under a 2.5-tonne pack of stone slabs while unloading a truck.
In a Health and Safety Executive prosecution, City of London Magistrates’ Court was told how the worker was unloading pallets from an artic at a Hillingdon, London, site in October 2010. A pack of stone slabs fell, trapping the employee against another pallet. The man received injuries to his chest and left arm, which required several operations and months of rehabilitation. M&R Granite & Marble had failed to ensure the man was not exposed to the risk of falling slabs during handling operations. The court heard the worker’s employment prospects are likely to be affected because of the incident.
Company director Monzer Mahmoud Alrayes, who was supervising, pleaded guilty to breaching Section 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. He was ined £5,000 and ordered to pay £2,079 costs. M&R Granite & Marble also pleaded guilty to breaching the act, and was ined £5,000 and £2,079 costs.
