FLJ KIHFR TO Carl Stephens' letter (CM 29 October) relating to the issue of farmers being allowed
to carry out work with unsuitable equipment for highway use that. arguably, should be carried out by a licensed operator. I would like to add my opinion.
Not only are farm vehicles slowing down traffic on main A-roads as well as B-roads, farmers are also often stopping traffic by closing roads for periods of time without any prior notification or authority to do so, and, to my knowledge, without any redress from the authorities, I know this happens regularly on the A39, A361 and B3141 in Somerset. The way in which they carry out this illegal blocking of roads is by walking herds of cattle along them.
How about making it mandatory that access is created between all fields on the green side of the fence to the crossing point? This should only be allowed to be directly opposite the entrance to the farm/ milking parlour with a sign showing what time the crossing is in use.
This could save hundreds — if not thousands — of lost hours per year, and also reduce those dreaded CO, emissions, I could
also go on about the mud anc mess they leave behind, but whal would really be the point?
