well looked after examples"con Kingsbeer
Colin Kingsbeer, used truck sales manager at Ford and Slater Leicester, says: "The FAD85 8x4 rigid is well established in the second-hand market. There is a strong following for clean, well looked after examples. Tipping work can be fairly seasonal in nature and demand is usually at its highest in the spring when local authorities have the funds to catch up on municipal work. Unfortunately the used 85 Series tipper is a rare beast. There were a few muckaways being bandied about around Christmas time but their source has long since dried up, while the insulated bodied versions are almost extinct.
"The latest 85CF 340 is slow to come on to the used market, again due to low numbers, even though Daf takes the largest share of the multi-axle rigid market. Last year the market for new six and eight-wheelers picked up by about 10% overall and that may ease the situation slightly in a year or se. When we did have a couple of ex-factory demonstrators they sold as soon as they were advertised.
The new 12.8-litre engine coupled to the now standard nine-speed 2F gearbox is well liked by operators. The feedback we have is very positive, with payloads of 20 tonnes and a bit more with alloy bodies. A 12-month-old ex-demo will attract a price tag of £45,000-50,000 if you can find one. That's a hell of a saving against the new price."
