SCOTLAND'S central Regional Council is contributing in the region of £750,000 annually to a bus operation in school bus and concessionary fares. And for that money, believes Cllr Charles Brown, speaking to the council's planning and development committee they should be entitled to representation on the board of management of the operator, W. Alexander & Sons (Midlands) Ltd.
The bus operator has asked the local authority to consider subsidising uneconomic ser vices in the region, otherwise consideration would be given to withdrawing services which are not patronised.
It was also suggested that the council should define routes which should be retained. In a statement giving details of estimated revenue and operating costs per mile of certain services within the region, the company indicated that a total subsidy of £473,134 would be required up to March 31 next year if the services were to be maintained.
