• Health and safety inspectors were due yesterday (26 June) to launch a massive crackdown on lorries carrying dangerous substances in the North West.
The operation, dubbed Chemcheck North West, was being planned by the Health and Safety Executive and six police forces from Cheshire to Cumbria.
Trucks carrying chemicals, explosives, radioactives and other dangerous loads were being targeted at eight checkpoints on major roads and motorways.
