• Special nuclear flask carrying semi-trailers built at a cost of around £1 million by Crane Fruehauf are entering service with Nuclear Electric and Scottish Electric power companies.
Ten for NE are STGO Cat 2 t up to 80 tonnes GCW) rated for faster road speeds. These have five air-sprung 9.99-tonne axles, the rear three turning sirnultoneously through angles up to 20. 30' and 40' (reammst) via a linkage from the kingpin.
The forward pair are fixed with a front lifter. A sliding cover keeps the flasks dry en route and special hydraulic landing legs on pivoting arms are powered from a PI-0 on the tractor unit.
NE has opted for Leyland Daf 95-400 6x4's while the Scottish firm is using Unipower S24-s. both with 298kW (400hp) and automatic transmissions.
Trailers for SE are less complicated but having three fixed mechanically-sprung 14 tonne axles are in the STGO Cat 3 group and will be limited on speed.
They are built with open decks and a hand-powered landing leg arrangement.
Both types of trailer carry up to 60-tonne payloads hut the covered, five-axle version is the heavier at 14.64 tonnes unladen.
