I Edward Roderick. chief executive of Christian Salvesen, has appealed to the government for a new specification of digital tachographs to support Integration with existing vehicle telematics equipment,
Speaking at the recent Freight Transport Association Freight Summit 2003, Roderick said that as manufacturers of digital tachos had announced they could not produce a warking model that met the technical specification by the required date, the digital tachograph specification should be rewritten rather than the deadline simply being extended.
''Our ideal would be for the tachograph specification to be rewritten so as to allow it to interface with the other telematics equipment that we are now starting to fit in our vehicles," he said.
"And with the Chancellor pressing ahead with plans for the introduction of a truck/road-user charge from 2006, wouldn't it make sense if all these regulatory functions could be performed by one secure unit?
This may be beyond the powers of even joined-up government, but as an end user of all this equipment I believe that It is a view that should be listened to," he added.
